VPN data and mobile data are two different balances
A VPN does not replace your SIM, mobile plan or Wi-Fi connection. On mobile data, your carrier measures the traffic carried by its network. A prepaid VPN provider separately measures usage against your VPN allowance. A VPN connection can therefore draw from both balances during the same session.
On hotel Wi-Fi, you normally use the hotel connection and your VPN allowance rather than your SIM data. If the phone switches to mobile data, carrier or roaming charges may apply. Check the active network before starting a large download.
What makes a VPN data balance go down?
Video, calls, browsing, uploads and downloads can all generate traffic through the VPN. Cloud photo backups, app updates and background sync can continue even when you are not actively looking at the screen. Traffic depends on which apps and routes actually use the tunnel.
Encryption and tunnel packets add traffic, but there is no single accurate percentage for every device and workload. Packet sizes, protocol settings and network behavior differ. WireGuard can also send small keepalive packets when that option is enabled. An idle connection is not a guarantee of zero traffic.
Measure a typical session before choosing a pack
- Record the VPN balance or usage shown in the app or web dashboard, including the time.
- Use the VPN for a normal session. Note its duration and your activities; pause unrelated large downloads to get a clearer estimate.
- Refresh the usage display after the session. Counters may not update instantly, so wait for the next update before comparing.
- Repeat on another typical day. Use the measured daily amount and add a buffer for heavier days or background activity.
Your phone’s data counter and the VPN dashboard can differ because their scope, units and update times differ. Device statistics help you identify busy apps; the provider’s balance is the reference for your remaining prepaid VPN allowance.
Estimate a prepaid VPN data budget
Use daily GB × days × (1 + extra percentage ÷ 100). The values below are an editable example, not a measured browsing or streaming benchmark. With 0.2 GB a day for 7 days and 20% extra, the planning budget is 1.68 GB. It does not promise a particular number of hours of video.
Reduce avoidable traffic
- Download offline maps or documents before travel, while connected to a network and VPN allowance you intend to use.
- Review app updates, cloud backups and autoplay settings. Moving a download to Wi-Fi saves mobile data, but it still uses VPN data if it runs through the tunnel.
- Check the server and connection status after changing networks. Disconnect when you finish only if you no longer need the tunnel.
- Compare occasional use with daily heavy use before selecting a billing model.
mVPN uses one-time prepaid packs and purchased GB do not expire according to the current product configuration. Available pack sizes, balances and purchase options should be checked in the app or dashboard. A VPN does not waive mobile roaming charges.
Common questions
Does a VPN give me free mobile data?
No. You still need an internet connection, and your mobile carrier can charge for traffic carried by its network.
Does using Wi-Fi stop my prepaid VPN balance decreasing?
No. Traffic through the VPN can use your VPN allowance on either Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Is the calculator a quote or a guaranteed pack size?
No. It is a planning calculation using numbers you enter. The app or dashboard shows the actual available packs and account balance.
