The basic difference
A subscription charges on a recurring schedule, usually for continued access during each billing period. A prepaid VPN data wallet charges when you buy a pack; usage then draws down from the balance. Neither model is automatically the best choice — the important question is whether your real usage is occasional or continuous.
Prepaid and subscription at a glance
| Question | Prepaid data wallet | Recurring subscription |
|---|---|---|
| When do you pay? | When you choose a data pack. | On a monthly or annual renewal schedule. |
| What happens to unused value? | Purchased mVPN web GB remain in the account. | The billing period ends whether or not the allowance was used. |
| Best fit | Occasional travel, public Wi‑Fi, or a backup connection. | Predictable, heavy, everyday VPN use. |
| What to watch | Track your remaining balance and supported platforms. | Check renewal terms, cancellation rules, and the allowance. |
When prepaid data is a good fit
You travel a few times a year
Keep a balance ready for airports, hotels, and cafés without paying during months when you do not connect.
You want a backup VPN
Use a separate connection for a specific device or network without adding another recurring bill.
You dislike auto-renewals
Buy the amount you need, then decide later whether to top up. mVPN web packs do not automatically renew.
See the full pay-as-you-go VPN explanation for supported platforms and the distinction between web packs and native iOS access.
When a subscription may be simpler
If you connect for many hours every day, stream frequently through a VPN, or need a predictable always-on allowance, a recurring plan may be easier to budget. Compare the provider’s supported devices, server locations, data policy, renewal price, and cancellation terms — not just the introductory price.
For any model, choose a provider whose privacy practices you understand, and remember that a VPN does not replace HTTPS, device security, or multi-factor authentication.
Prepaid VPN questions
Do mVPN web gigabytes expire?
No. Purchased web GB remain in the account until used. They are separate from the native iOS app’s complimentary daily allowance.
Can I buy more data without leaving Billing?
Yes. The mVPN web dashboard Billing page includes data-pack purchase cards, and the “Buy more” actions scroll directly to them.
Which data-pack size should I choose?
Choose based on the devices and activities you actually protect. A smaller pack is a lower-commitment way to test occasional use; a larger pack reduces how often you need to top up. Current pack sizes and prices are shown in the dashboard.
